Forthcoming Publications
“The Space Between: Muslim Feminism, De/Coloniality, and the Feminist Coloniality of Reason” (2027/2028)
This is an expanded version of a paper delivered at AAR 2024 for the Islam, Women, and Gender Unit on Muslim feminism and decoloniality. In this paper, I explore the genealogies of Muslim and decolonial feminism as two distinct academic and political projects. Both have very different orientations to the arc of feminist struggle. Through this comparison, I discuss Muslim feminism’s reliance on what Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui terms the feminist coloniality of reason. Through Rivera Cusicanqui, I argue that any aspiration towards Muslim feminism in the west would have to necessarily delink from the west.
Ocular Violations: Photography, Theology, and Violence in Gil Anidjar’s The Jew, the Arab: A History of the Enemy (2026/2027)
This is an expanded version of a paper delivered at AAR 2024 for the Continental Philosophy and Theology Unit at AAR 2024 celebrating the 25th anniversary of Gil Anidjar’s The Jew, The Arab: A History of the Enemy. In this paper, I use Reverend Isaac Munther’s Christmas nativity in the rubble and the use of Christian theological language in Roland Barthes’s Camera Obscura as departure points to discuss the relevance of Gil Anidjar’s The Jew, the Arab: A History of the Enemy in relation to the genocide in Gaza.
Khidr Looses the Cannons: Disciplinary Boundaries and the Question of Engaged Knowledge Production in the Academic Study of Sufism & Mysticism, Routledge Handbook of Islamic Mysticism (Fall 2026/Spring 2027)
